Pumpkin Spice Latte

It tastes like Fall in a cup and when you make it yourself, you are in total control of the milk and sweeteners. You can use honey or maple syrup, which both easily dissolve into the drink. Keep in mind that adding pumpkin puree and fresh spices to coffee can give it a slightly grainy texture if you let the drink rest too long. Just stir it again to re-incorporate or

pumpkin spice latte with grated nutmeg

I have such fond memories of drinking pumpkin spice lattes in the past that I even ordered one last year. It smelled so good and I was so excited, but when I took a sip, it didn’t taste anything like I remembered. It was sickeningly sweet, and well, fake tasting. I have been on a clean eating journey for quite a few years now and I didn’t realize how much my tastebuds have changed. Or maybe the recipe at the coffee shop has changed over the years with the fake “flavors” getting more and more processed.

That was the last time I will order one of those and from now on, I’ll be sticking to my own homemade recipe. At home I can use natural sweeteners like maple syrup and real pumpkin puree instead of artificial pumpkin flavor.

Pumpkin Spice Drinks Mean Fall

It’s everywhere around us once the weather starts to turn cold and the leaves start falling. It’s so obnoxious just how many places pumpkin spice shows up. But so many of us still love the flavor and want to enjoy it without the crazy marketing shoving it in our faces.

I wrote an entire blog post about how to make lots of healthy pumpkin spice recipes at home so that you can enjoy it and still be gluten and dairy free.

ingredients for pumpkin spice latte

Ingredients You’ll Need

2 cups milk (your choice)

4 tablespoons pumpkin puree

4 tablespoons maple syrup

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Pinch allspice

Pinch ground ginger

Pinch vanilla powder or ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

½ cup coffee or 2 shots of espresso

How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte

  • In a small saucepan add everything except the coffee. Warm slightly over medium low heat until the milk just begins to steam, about 2 minutes.

  • Blend with an immersion blender in the pot for 10 seconds, until frothy. Or pour into a blender and blend until frothy.

  • Pour into a mug and add the coffee. Grate some fresh nutmeg over the top or sprinkle with cinnamon.

  • Stir and enjoy the pumpkin spice goodness!

If you want to pre-make a batch to use another time, and store it in the fridge, place all ingredients except coffee in a Quart size mason jar, blend with immersion/stick blender until frothy. Put a lid on the jar and refrigerate.

When you are ready for a mug of this latte, give the jar a good shake to incorporate the spices and then heat in a small pot, blending with the immersion blender before serving.

What kind of milk to use

My standard non-dairy milk at home is unsweetened almond milk. It’s shelf stable and the most neutral in flavor. Hazelnut, cashew, hemp and macadamia milks would all be great in this recipe because they are slightly sweet.
